Printed Memory: An Arts Publication
about Milwaukee and Black Artists
There is a grief that comes from loving a place that does not always love you back. And for many artists in Milwaukee, this grief is deep and can run generationally. The grief shows up in everyday lives. It lives in the vacant buildings full of memories, neighborhoods shaped by disinvestment, and the daily work of navigating systems that were never designed for everyone to thrive. But within grief, when we look for it, is evidence of care. We grieve because we know another future is possible.
For the first edition of Printed Memory, we invite artists, writers, photographers, storytellers, and memory keepers to explore the tension between what we carry and what we imagine.
We welcome visual art, photography, collage, poetry, essays, oral histories, maps, family archives, speculative design, letters, comics, and experimental work that express a connection to grief, memory, and care shaped by the hope of a liberated future. Show us how you, and your practice, are a seed, planted in rubble thriving in spite of.
Selected Printed Memory contributors will be compensated with a $50 stipend, a professional head shot and a copy of the publication. Submissions are due by October 31st via the form below.
